Movie Review: Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows

Sherlock Holmes Part 2 continues the saga of Guy Ritchie's Sherlock (or Shirley as he is surprisingly called by his brother in the movie!!!) as he finally meets and beats his nemesis, the Professor Moriarty (who was incidentally always just mentioned in the original series but never brought in as a character in the books). So now we see Holmes following the Professor across Europe when he sees the Professor's footprint in multiple events happening across Europe threatening peace on the continent. On the way, we see the gypsies and the German anarchists and an arms factory and a peace conference and so on.. From London to Paris to Berlin to Switzerland.. Sherlock and Watson (who was forcibly taken away from his honeymoon) follow his leads during their journey, going through many life-threatening incidents and coming out victorious. There is too much action in this part of the movie, as compared to the first. It's shot well, in typical Guy Ritchie style but it did get to

Movie Review: Don 2

Where do I start about this movie? It was terrible and completely unwatchable! What has Shah Rukh done to himself? He has started looking like a lizard now! With his cheeks sunk in, a lean and mean look, a stupid pout on his face all the time and the completely random expressions he has throughout the movie. Where has the cute-looking Shah Rukh of DDLJ and KKHH gone? He looks and acts so painfully now! And then there was Priyanka Chopra trying so hard to be a cool no-nonsense cop, but she too fails. The whole character does not come out convincingly at all. It all looks so fake and made-up and adds to the pain in the movie. And then the story! Aah the story! What do we say about that? Loopholes everywhere! Such a big don works alone and has no one other than Lara to help him out. Really? This movie didn't really have to be called Don either, it could have been any other heist movie (Except that no one then would have gone to watch it!). There are just too many things happeni

Movie Review: Ladies Vs Ricky Bahl

Hindi movies have set my movie standards so low, that any movie that I don't feel like walking out of is considered good enough by me:). Ladies Vs Ricky Bahl is like that. I'd say its a nice movie. Not great but one in which you will laugh and enjoy: as they say, paisa vasool . (As an aside, so many movies now have Delhi in them, it always nice to watch. Even though the portrayal is always very stereotypical, it brings a smile to your face knowing that its so true and real. It all feels a lot more special if you are an NRI and become so nostalgic with anything Indian or from your city:) ) Anyways about the movie, first the pros: Its a fun movie. A today's movie. Fun and believable characters. From Delhi, Mumbai, Lucknow and Goa. Acting was fine. Ranveer and Anushka were their usual self. Its a breezy movie, flowing along. I guess that's all the pros.  Now the cons: The story has too many loopholes, it could have been more taut and edited better. A conman conning pe

Movie Review: The Dirty Picture

Ewwww! I would like to forget that I ever saw this movie! Uggghhh!! Though have to give it to the producer, what a brilliant idea he had.. To portray a movie as a biography: It at least gets the masses to come and watch something which is nothing more than a vulgar blue film; which they wouldn't have seen otherwise. And I can't still believe how a mainstream actress agreed to do such a role either! And how did such a movie get to be categorized with the 'normal' movies we all see. Promos all over tv and everywhere. I am still in shock on what I saw! What was the movie about, I still haven't been able to figure out. Some depth, some story, some message, some entertainment? At least it should have had something somewhere? All it showed was the life of a dancing star who does all kinds of scenes and dances in movies and goes about her life in a reckless manner; regarding men, career and money. And I guess that's it. The rest was just all body show in a very vulga

Movie Review: Rockstar

Frankly, I am confused about this movie... Is it good, fine, great or terrible? At different times, its one of these.. Anyways let me talk about it more.. The Good: Ranbir Kapoor: he is a superstar in the making. Does different types of movies, tries to play different characters, acts really well and has a filmi background. What more do you need? I was amazed at how he transformed the character from a young college-goer to a much older and crazier rockstar with such ease. His acting is definitely something to be enjoyed. The music in the movie is different and enjoyable though I sometimes got bored because there are just too many songs (about 14 or so!!). Also the theme of the movie is what I am starting to like. A crazy love story, between two people, different in their personalities and their lives. How it spans continents and disease and fame and tough times. Its just a crazy love story. The movie also shows something about the 'celebrity' mind: they have it all but

Movie Review: RaOne

Given the overdose of RaOne publicity over the last few months, it was tough to stay away from the movie, especially given it stars Shah Rukh Khan and was released around the Diwali festivities. So we ended up watching it anyways in spite of the numerous not-so-kind reviews posted all over Facebook. And a short verdict would be: Its a watchable movie if you are a Shah Rukh fan or your tolerance for masala Hindi movies is very high (so I clearly was able to sit through the whole of it!!). If none of the two criteria apply to you though, you are better off giving the movie a miss! Anyways more about the movie: Its a purely fantasy movie, and to be able to sit through it, you really have to shut your brain off. The premise of the whole face-off between the superhero and the anti-hero is quite weak. There are countless loopholes in the story, you just have to stop noticing them after a point. The first half of the movie is still interesting in parts, but the second part was definitely

Movie Review: Saheb, Biwi and Gangster

Saheb, Biwi and Gangster borrows the basic premise from the original Guru Dutt movie with a similar name, Saheb, Biwi and Ghulam: A royal husband, a neglected wife and a new entrant to their haveli, the Ghulam (who is now a Gangster..). Thats where the commonality between the two movies ends though.. SB&G is a story about politics and power; love and lust; desire for attention and being used. Its a well made movie, tracing the moves of the Biwi, to get what she wants, through whichever means she can. Quite an interesting storyline, which though predictable after a point is still interest worthy. The acting by the lead cast is totally rocking! Mahie Gill is good, Shergill awesome. Randeep Hooda plays the role of the poor innocent boy caught at the wrong place well. He transforms from being a sane person in a house of crazies, to being fully crazy himself. Not a great movie, but definitely worth a watch. Would give it 3.5 stars.
