The World as we see it.. or is it?

Image
A lot of us assume what we know about the world to be true. And when new findings comes out in the open, the world as we know it changes. There are sometimes small new truths that change our view like ' daily flossing doesn't really help ' or the bigger ones like 'Pluto is no longer a planet'. I recently read a book which describes how much more we have learnt about old American civilisations and how it has changed our view of the Americas. In the same vein, I recently saw a show talking about the map of the world as we know it and the reality which is different. I had read about this difference many times before - how the relative size of the continents is not really accurate, and how that played into the hands of the imperialist powers. But somehow. I had never looked at the alternate 'more accurate' maps ever. Till I did! It felt creepy and unnatural! Its not the same world view as we have seen and known for years, what we were taught at school and

Mumbai nostalgia

NDTV put up this video uncovered from some British archives, which was made in Bombay 80 years ago. Its an imperialist video which tries to show how the British have taken India out of its dark ages, but leaving that aspect aside, how charming does Bombay look? Uncrowded, smaller buildings, a hustle-bustle which is not crazy. Its worth a watch for whoever has stayed at the metropolis and feels something for it...

Interesting links

Here is a chart showing world migration, from and to different countries .... This is a page showing indian memes . Its hilarious and you can read it for long and keep laughing the whole time gives its all so true!! And another one listing things we may not have known about India !

Interesting articles - Use things the right way

This has been one of those articles online , which actually tell you something useful! We have been using a lot of products the wrong way, think its time we use them correctly:)

Indian Panga League

This is a new mode of advertising that Virgin Mobile has used, possibly for the first time? Introducing ads on the net rather than showing them on TV. Found these quite funny to watch actually, fans of different IPL teams talking to each other on the phone trying to crack jokes on the other team. The jokes are mostly PJs, a lot of them have a tinge of truth too though! The swearing at the end of each phone call could have been avoided, but still good fun.. Watch them (Given below are the ads in three parts)... Indian Panga League Part 1 Indian Panga League Part 2 Indian Panga League Part 3

Deleted Movie Scenes: DDLJ

First of all, youtube is aweeeeeesomeee! Hats off to this invention or whatever you may want to call it! Once the tribute is over, let me start off with the topic of this post:). Some days back I saw some deleted scenes from Hindi movies, which never made it to the silver screen. The ones from my favorite movies were fun, as sometimes it even gives a new angle or an added look to the story. Like 'Rang de Basanti', 'Kuch Kuch Hota Hai', 'Lagaan', 'Jodha Akbar', 'Chak De', 'Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi' and so on.. But my favorite I guess would always remain the scenes from Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge. They so add some more to the story; why Amrish Puri was as angry and bitter always; how once Raj tries to make Simran jealous:) ; how he almost gives up on Amrish Puri:) and so on... Watch it , if you are a DDLJ fan:)

Facebook overtakes Google!

As the article says, "..... the web is becoming more sociable than searchable..." a huge paradign shift, wont you say so? The net is no more just a big storehouse of information (as it started out initially) but has become our alter ego, where we make, meet and enjoy with friends.. Am not sure whether its a positive or negative development, but it is something huge for sure...

Did You Know : Wikiracing

I would like to equate Wikipedia to Google, as innovative and able to change the face of how we search for information on the internet. Today, search for most of us on any topic, is typing " wiki xyz" into Google. Wiki has completely changed the way we search for information on the net. Of course the scale of Google is on a different level altogether, but still, their similar quest for creativity leads them both higher and higher. Here is a new concept developed by Wiki, 'wikiracing'. Read about it here.. Isn't it interesting? Let's see if it catches up or not..

Did you know : Trilemmas

Something very interesting I read on this Wiki page about Trilemmas . From the Wiki page, one of the interesting trilemmas I read, the social trilemma.... "A society cannot be simultaneously fair, free and equal. If it is fair, individuals who work harder will accumulate more wealth; if it is free, parents will leave the bulk of their inheritance to their children; but then it will not be equal, as people will begin life with different fortunes." So you can choose maximum, two of the three only. Is this where the concept of socialism came from??

Did you know : Buffalo fun

This is really amazing!! Did you know, "Buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo" is actually a valid English sentence?!! Read here . Now I think I will have to agree with Amitabh in Namak Halaal, that "English ij a bhery bhery phunny language!" Btw the sentence above means something like, Buffalo buffalos (as in buffalos from the city of Buffalo in US) who Buffalo buffalos (again) buffalo (as in bully), they also buffalo (as in bully) other Buffalo buffalos... Phew, after typing it all, I seem to have forgotten how to spell buffallooo!

Did you know: DDLJ

Who was the first choice for the lead role in 'Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge?' Answer is : Tom Cruise!! I cant believe it, and am happy it didn't turn out this way.. We would have lost one of the most romantic movies of our times.. Apparently, Tom Cruise was to play an American boy, whom Kajol falls in love with.. I prefer our 'Raj' though:)
