Movie Review: RaOne

Given the overdose of RaOne publicity over the last few months, it was tough to stay away from the movie, especially given it stars Shah Rukh Khan and was released around the Diwali festivities. So we ended up watching it anyways in spite of the numerous not-so-kind reviews posted all over Facebook.

And a short verdict would be: Its a watchable movie if you are a Shah Rukh fan or your tolerance for masala Hindi movies is very high (so I clearly was able to sit through the whole of it!!). If none of the two criteria apply to you though, you are better off giving the movie a miss!

Anyways more about the movie: Its a purely fantasy movie, and to be able to sit through it, you really have to shut your brain off. The premise of the whole face-off between the superhero and the anti-hero is quite weak. There are countless loopholes in the story, you just have to stop noticing them after a point. The first half of the movie is still interesting in parts, but the second part was definitely too boring (when the robot is trying to learn about every human emotion got just too predictable and stale).

The music in the movie is very very average; other than the very catchy 'Chammak Challo' nothing much to write home about. Shah Rukh's acting is average at best and he has this weird pout on his face half the time which makes no sense! Kareena Kapoor is very very painful and Arjun Rampal had no place in the movie, why was he even cast?? And for that matter, why was even Rajnikant there?? Made no sense at all (in fact, he did not look like Rajni either!).

The special effects were the only saving grace I would say. They are really really good and believable.  Other than that, nothing much.. Would go with 2.5 stars for this one. Actually let me go with 1.5 stars, and that too because I am a Shah Rukh fan.
