Movie Review: Shuddh Desi Romance
Shuddh Desi Romance got positive reviews from most reviewers (an average of 3+ from 13 reviews which is quite amazing for an Indian movie) but I don't agree fully with them. Not because of how good or bad the movie was, but because of the message of the movie, which I do not agree with. But more of that later...
First let me start with what the movie was about: (its confusing actually, but will try). The movie starts with Raghu (Sushant Rajput) who works as a fake baraati in marriages, running away from his wedding because he had met Gayatri (Parineeti) while his baraat was on its way. He runs into her later, and they start a live-in relationship soon. They have fun, till they decide to get married, and this time its Parineeti's turn to run away from the wedding.
Now Raghu runs into and then falls in love with Tara, the bride he had left on the wedding altar. And this is where the movie becomes confusing. When Raghu is ready to propose to Tara, he runs into Gayatri again, and a couple of confusing sequences later decides to marry Gayatri itself. Of course, this is not the end yet. They plan their wedding, and both run away again!! And this time they agree, that marriage is an unnecessary evil and not for them.
The positives for the movie are many. The first half is funny and feels real. The dialogues are witty. The sequences memorable. Acting by all is top-class. Parineeti is fiesty, and looks beautiful. Sushant looks cute and sincere. Vaani (Tara) is pretty too. Plus Rishi Kapoor shines in his role as the head of the fake baraat business. The expressions on his face, his dialogues, his acting, the local Jaipuri attire: all is memorable. Music is average, but not a downer. And the visuals of Jaipur add a lot of colour and exoticness to the movie.
For me, where the movie lost it was the confusion they showed Sushant in. It almost felt like a better version of Cocktail. How do women fall for this guy, and why can he not decide? Almost deciding to propose to one girl and then the other and then back and so on.. Just felt too shallow and unlikeable. This was the part that I did not appreciate and took away something from the movie for me.
Still would go for 3.5 stars for the movie, just for the way it was made. Great acting, funny dialogues and entertainment for 3 hours if you don't try to go deeper into whether you agree with the message or not. A definite not-miss.
