Movie Review: Cocktail
Cocktail, is it part of the new age Indian cinema that we see so often nowadays, a different and more realistic look at what we are rather than the nice image we still have of our society? Frankly, no. It's a bad movie, terrible actually but I would still recommend a watch. Why? Just because it is different and it does start out in a new direction even though it loses its way in between and ends up where it always has been...
Anyways, let me first start with the characters. Deepika (Veronica): the first thing about her is that she looks hottt! I mean, really hot! And surprise surprise, I never thought I would say this but I think she acted, quite well in fact. Which is something new for her given her earlier movies. As for her character, its a rocking one. I wudn't go into whether what she does is right or wrong, but its just a well etched character, she is who she is, fun, carefree, independent and always partying. Its something different too, don't remember seeing many movies with a heroine's character like that.
And then there is Saif (Gautam). I could think of only one word for him, loser. That's what he is, his behavior, his acts, everything about him. The 'he's a really good person inside' part, I think I missed. I still cant get why both the girls fell for him? And the last of the main characters was Diana (Meera), the typical good Indian girl but that's inconsequential, she wasn't important anyways.
The rest of the cast was commendable too, Dimple as the loud but large hearted Punjabi mother was good as was Boman Irani, the more-friend-than-uncle to Saif.
But then there was the storyline. It started out well, three young people, having a good time. A fast life, party and all. Some fun, some jokes and too many songs (all while partying!).
And then the pain starts! The second half of the movie was just off. It had no substance, no basis, no logic, no realism, nothing! For one, there was no reason why Saif had to fall for Diana and Diana for Saif. The whole thing was too weak. Falling for a friend's boyfriend was bad enough, but Saif? His character had nothing good about him other than he is funny! It was soo lame!!
And then expecting Deepika to accept it all was even too much. How could you fall in love with your girlfriend's best friend? And expect her to accept it? One day Saif is with Deepika and the next day, with her roommate, Diana? I am not even talking about it being morally right or wrong. I was just left wondering how was it even feasible, emotionally and realistically? For all three of them. What happens after that is even more bizarre, relationships being forced on all of them. And Deepika doing a u-turn in her life, trying to be the perfect typical Indian woman. I think by then the story was so out of hand that nothing could have saved it!
Another weakness in the script was that what started out as a new-modern-age cinema about today's generation and their lives, quickly turned out to be the same old Hindi movie track, where the guy falls for the salwar-kameez wearing, cooking and praying girl! What turned out to be a more open minded film went the same old corny way, with the same dialogues, same melodrama and the same senti stuff.
Not good at all. Would go with 2.5 on this, if nothing else but for Deepika's portrayal in the first half.
