Movie Review: Don 2

Where do I start about this movie? It was terrible and completely unwatchable! What has Shah Rukh done to himself? He has started looking like a lizard now! With his cheeks sunk in, a lean and mean look, a stupid pout on his face all the time and the completely random expressions he has throughout the movie. Where has the cute-looking Shah Rukh of DDLJ and KKHH gone? He looks and acts so painfully now! And then there was Priyanka Chopra trying so hard to be a cool no-nonsense cop, but she too fails. The whole character does not come out convincingly at all. It all looks so fake and made-up and adds to the pain in the movie. And then the story! Aah the story! What do we say about that? Loopholes everywhere! Such a big don works alone and has no one other than Lara to help him out. Really? This movie didn't really have to be called Don either, it could have been any other heist movie (Except that no one then would have gone to watch it!). There are just too many things happeni...

Movie Review: Ladies Vs Ricky Bahl

Hindi movies have set my movie standards so low, that any movie that I don't feel like walking out of is considered good enough by me:). Ladies Vs Ricky Bahl is like that. I'd say its a nice movie. Not great but one in which you will laugh and enjoy: as they say, paisa vasool . (As an aside, so many movies now have Delhi in them, it always nice to watch. Even though the portrayal is always very stereotypical, it brings a smile to your face knowing that its so true and real. It all feels a lot more special if you are an NRI and become so nostalgic with anything Indian or from your city:) ) Anyways about the movie, first the pros: Its a fun movie. A today's movie. Fun and believable characters. From Delhi, Mumbai, Lucknow and Goa. Acting was fine. Ranveer and Anushka were their usual self. Its a breezy movie, flowing along. I guess that's all the pros.  Now the cons: The story has too many loopholes, it could have been more taut and edited better. A conman conning pe...

Movie Review: The Dirty Picture

Ewwww! I would like to forget that I ever saw this movie! Uggghhh!! Though have to give it to the producer, what a brilliant idea he had.. To portray a movie as a biography: It at least gets the masses to come and watch something which is nothing more than a vulgar blue film; which they wouldn't have seen otherwise. And I can't still believe how a mainstream actress agreed to do such a role either! And how did such a movie get to be categorized with the 'normal' movies we all see. Promos all over tv and everywhere. I am still in shock on what I saw! What was the movie about, I still haven't been able to figure out. Some depth, some story, some message, some entertainment? At least it should have had something somewhere? All it showed was the life of a dancing star who does all kinds of scenes and dances in movies and goes about her life in a reckless manner; regarding men, career and money. And I guess that's it. The rest was just all body show in a very vulga...

Movie Review: Rockstar

Frankly, I am confused about this movie... Is it good, fine, great or terrible? At different times, its one of these.. Anyways let me talk about it more.. The Good: Ranbir Kapoor: he is a superstar in the making. Does different types of movies, tries to play different characters, acts really well and has a filmi background. What more do you need? I was amazed at how he transformed the character from a young college-goer to a much older and crazier rockstar with such ease. His acting is definitely something to be enjoyed. The music in the movie is different and enjoyable though I sometimes got bored because there are just too many songs (about 14 or so!!). Also the theme of the movie is what I am starting to like. A crazy love story, between two people, different in their personalities and their lives. How it spans continents and disease and fame and tough times. Its just a crazy love story. The movie also shows something about the 'celebrity' mind: they have it all but ...

Movie Review: RaOne

Given the overdose of RaOne publicity over the last few months, it was tough to stay away from the movie, especially given it stars Shah Rukh Khan and was released around the Diwali festivities. So we ended up watching it anyways in spite of the numerous not-so-kind reviews posted all over Facebook. And a short verdict would be: Its a watchable movie if you are a Shah Rukh fan or your tolerance for masala Hindi movies is very high (so I clearly was able to sit through the whole of it!!). If none of the two criteria apply to you though, you are better off giving the movie a miss! Anyways more about the movie: Its a purely fantasy movie, and to be able to sit through it, you really have to shut your brain off. The premise of the whole face-off between the superhero and the anti-hero is quite weak. There are countless loopholes in the story, you just have to stop noticing them after a point. The first half of the movie is still interesting in parts, but the second part was definitely...

Movie Review: Saheb, Biwi and Gangster

Saheb, Biwi and Gangster borrows the basic premise from the original Guru Dutt movie with a similar name, Saheb, Biwi and Ghulam: A royal husband, a neglected wife and a new entrant to their haveli, the Ghulam (who is now a Gangster..). Thats where the commonality between the two movies ends though.. SB&G is a story about politics and power; love and lust; desire for attention and being used. Its a well made movie, tracing the moves of the Biwi, to get what she wants, through whichever means she can. Quite an interesting storyline, which though predictable after a point is still interest worthy. The acting by the lead cast is totally rocking! Mahie Gill is good, Shergill awesome. Randeep Hooda plays the role of the poor innocent boy caught at the wrong place well. He transforms from being a sane person in a house of crazies, to being fully crazy himself. Not a great movie, but definitely worth a watch. Would give it 3.5 stars.

Movie Review: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Part 2)

Well, here it was... The last and final episode of the Harry Potter Series. The End. And it had to be seen. And it was.. But did it satisfy the Harry Potter fan? I would say no, it did not.. The movie traces the end of the series, with Harry finding and finishing off all the final Horcruxes and finally facing Voldemort and finishing him too. Most of the loose ends of the ealier movies are tied in this last part of the series. But something was definitely missing. The movie is definitely for the book lovers; without reading the book you cannot even comprehend completely what the movie was all about. It's only if you know the world of Harry Potter would you be able to fill in all the missing pieces of the puzzle which the movie fails to even mention. But even then, the last episode of the series failed to capture what it all meant. The end of a saga, the fulfilling of seven years of search and mystery. All parts of the puzzle coming together to give a full meaning to Harry P...

Movie Review : Aarakshan

Aarakshan follows the story of Prabhakar Anand, the principal of STM college. He is a man of principles who believes in true education of all. He runs free classes for the weak at his house and is revered by all around him. He however rubs the politicians the wrong way and then they wreak havoc on his life, causing him to lose his job, his house and his reputation. He however fights back on the strength of his abilities, and his belief in real education. During this period, the issue of caste based reservation comes up but then gets lost in the host of other things shown during the movie. Aarakshan is a movie with a confused message. It starts out with trying to deal with the issues of casteism and reservation, as reflected in the title of the movie. But at some point it becomes all about the issues of education and corruption in our country, and leaves the audience confused about what the movie is trying to say (By any chance, did I see the censored version of the movie with all th...

Right and Wrong

What is right and what is wrong? And what comes in the grey? Doesn't too much come in the grey region?? These questions confuse the mind time and again.. while reading a book or seeing a television serial or a movie or any other such portrayal of life: where life's events and decisions are shown.. There are so many situations in these portrayals, when you wonder what you would do in the same place and you do not get a clear answer.. And makes you fear that if you can't decide even when not faced with the situation, what would you do when faced with it in real life? These questions came up again while watching the grand epics of epics, Mahabharat. What a story it is, with layers after layers of characterisations.. a multitude of characters all interlinked together in a complex maze.. decisions taken by people leading to unexpected consequences generations later.. Such an interesting study on karma and characters it is. What would you say about Bheeshma, a pe...

Another Emergency-like situation?

Ramdev's protest broken up by Delhi Police and the protestors beaten up..        Anna Hazare not allowed to hold a fast at Jantar Mantar.. but at JP Park..              .. and that too, for not more than 3 days and with not more than 5,000 people... What is India coming to? The largest democracy in the world but protests being stifled?? And the PM shirks any responsibility,  saying he cannot be involved.. (and turning a blind eye to things happening in his administration yet again!). Can the head of the government say that this does not fall within his purview? Can the government get away with not allowing a peaceful protest just because the protest is against the government? Such headlines coming in the papers regularly do not paint a positive picture of what des is coming to.. and worries a bit.. Lets see what it leads to?

Movie Review: Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara

Zindagi na milegi dobara, as would be expected with such a star cast, had managed to raise expectations a lot..! And it did match those, but failed to surpass them.. The first half of the movie is awesome fun! Three friends on an adventure trip across the towns of Spain, three men who try to be boys and have some old-styled fun! The dialogues are witty, the jokes outright funny, poking fun at each others shortcomings: its all just like the old school and college days:). The jokes in this half of the movie are the type that you would laugh out loud at while rocking your seat. Totally enjoyed it! Farhan Akhtar was a revelation, he totally rocked as the funny guy of the group. His expressions when trying to crack a joke or stifle a laugh were just so real! Hritik was a caricature of the materialist banker, though of course his actual profession could not be ascertained with certainty:))! Was he a trader or an investment banker or a broker! But thats not important I guess. Abhay acted...

Movie Review: Delhi Belly

Wah wah wah! Am so impressed.. Seeing a new Hindi movie after so long, and I wasn't disappointed at all! Aamir Khan has managed to consistently deliver something new and good everytime, and he has done it again..! And I think its a good idea for Imran Khan also to stick to doing projects with his mamu . Was a welcome change from Luck and Kidnap (neither of which I had the courage to watch actually!). Anyways to the movie.. Delhi Belly is in a league of its own, so very different from the English artsy kind of movies we are so used to seeing.. So cool and chic and youthful without being pretentious and artificial.. It just felt so natural, to the point of surprising me! The story is nothing new I guess, its been done to death in many movies especially Guy Ritchie's ones.  Delhi Belly is similar, tracing a couple of days in the life of three friends staying in a run-down house in Delhi. One is a journalist, one a photographer and one a cartoonist: each character has his ow...

Sallu is back!!

Salman Khan seems to have created a niche kind of roles for himself in the last few years, and what a niche it is!! Wanted, Dabangg and now ready? Loud, brash, over-the-top, unbelievable but a lovable character.. He has started being himself in all his movies now, with the swagger of a star, and limited acting or even dancing abilities! It looks like he has no more concerns for any conventional sensibilities! The new song from 'Ready', Character Dheela, is the perfect example of it. You see the song, and you know its made for Salman!! Fun, total masti and no logic.. ahaa..! What a pleasure to see someone has the guts to just be himself, whatever he is.. and enjoy it totally!! Nice rocking song, totally fun! Go see it!!

Movie Review: Dum Maaro Dum

Aaaaaah!! Finally a Hindi movie is released! After ages!! Agreed cricket is the nation's religion but so are movies!! And unlike the real religions, these can surely co-exist peacefully! Why then such a drought for so long a time??!!! Anyways looks like the industry has said, cricket (and the IPL) can go to hell, we will start releasing movies anyways!! And so finally, we've got to see a Bollywood offering after so long... Dum Maaro Dum is a thriller set in Goa; following a police officer's war against the drug cartel in the state. Its is a nice movie, past paced with never a boring moment. There are multiple stories in the movie all crossing paths with each other; the vulnerable lovers separated by distance, where the guy gets involved in the drug ring: the police officer with his own memories and demons to fight against: the singer whose ex has been caught in the ring long ago; and the background of the whole story is the beautiful and idyllic Goan setting.. The cha...

Movie Review: Harishchandrachi Factory

I guess a movie not in Hindi or English is foreign cinema, isnt it:)? Anyways Harishchandrachi is a Marathi movie on the making of the first Indian silent movie, 'Raja Harishchandra' and of course the start of the biggest film industry in the world. It is such a beautiful and positive movie, its actually surprising! Most of the non-mainstream movies in India seem to focus so much on the depressing aspects of life, this movie would actually qualify as an exception! And it was India's entry to the Oscars in the foreign film category too! As a friend mentioned, he kept waiting for tragedy to strike at any point in the movie which eventually doesn't! Harishchandrachi is the story of Dadasaheb Phalke or Khepla as he prefers to be called while making this first Indian movie. I might have used the words, of the 'struggles' of Khepla to make the movie, but its been shown in such a positive way, that using the word struggles doesn't do justice to the tone of the ...

Theatre Review : How to succeed in business without really trying

How to succeed.... is a musical comedy playing on Broadway currently and stars Daniel Radcliffe (or better known as Harry Potter) and John Larroquette in the major roles.  How to succeed is a spoof on the corporate world, where the protagonist uses a self help book on "how to succeed in business" to make his way up the corporate ladder. His methods are morally questionable, but following those he rises up from being a window-washer to the Chairman of the big World Wide Wickets company.  The tricks used by him include anything and everything, making the right contacts including with the secretaries of the bosses (;-) ), of getting your bosses fired to get their jobs, knowing inside information about people to use as and when required, of trying to find common links with the higher ups and so on... People in the office hate him or fear him and on the way, he ignores the one person who actually cares for him for what he is. The list of what he does is lon...

Victory and Euphoria

Image
We've won it! 2011 Cricket World Cup is India's! Dhoni and team have done it for the country:). After years of watching world cup after world cup and being disappointed everytime, its finally happened! And Sachin finally gets his hand on the elusive trophy. Still can't believe it, still hasn't sunk in.. but its true!! We are the world champions now.. Finally, and after so long...!!! Will remember it for long, we were there when it happened.. Following India through the initial stages, where they struggled many times. But when it came to the big matches, the team stepped up! Australia beaten at Ahmedabad and Pakistan beaten at the high profile match at Mohali. And the final.. cheering and following each ball with waited breath.. ! This is one match, one win our generation will remember!! The unhappiness with Mahela's century.. the lost hope when Sri Lanka made 274.. the panic when we lost Sehwag and Tendulkar too soon.. and then the rocking knock by Gambhir...

Movie Review : Limitless

Limitless is an English  masala  movie (as much masala an English movie can be!!), so obviously I enjoyed watching it:). I guess the most important thing while watching this movie is to have low expectations and not think too much; just assume what they are showing is feasible and then relax and have fun! Limitless is the story of a loser writer, Eddie, who comes across an illegal drug NZT- 48 which increases the activity of the brain to its full capacity rather than the 20% it works at most of the times. So now Eddie can finish writing a book in four days, learn languages in minutes, find anomalies in trading to make millions, outsmart anyone and basically do a lot lot more than what an average person can! And how he makes use of these powers is what this whole movie is about.  His flirtation with the Wall Street, his fling with the law, his escapades from goons and others after the pill and so on.... There is everything in the movie: comedy, action, suspense,...

Inspiring..

Sometime back, I came across this article about an MBA woman sarpanch of a village in India and was pleasantly surprised reading this. It made me happy to know that at least some educated youth of the country are actually doing what a lot of us just love to talk about.. Of actually making a difference to our people, and doing something concrete (even in their own small way) rather than just talking about it but then just expecting others to do something about it rather than themselves.. I have too at times thought of doing something like this, something at the grassroot level, but till now have never really done anything.. This story is definitely inspiring to people like me I guess!

Movie Review : The Lives of Others

Another in the series of foreign films, is this masterpiece, 'The Lives of Others', a German 2006 movie which details a period of the GDR's(the Communist East Germany's) history. When you see this movie, it affects you and leaves you moved. But when you later on think about the movie at leisure, you see so much more than you initially saw, so many more layers, layers after layer of human behavior portrayed in various states.. A truly touching and intelligent movie... I don't really know where to start, first the story. The background of the movie is the GDR, where the government had total control over the lives of the common man, with the Secret Police, Stasi keeping track of all their activities. The movie starts with a Stasi Captain, Weisler setting up a house surveillance on a writer assumed to be loyal to the Communist regime, Dreyman. Presumably, the surveillance is to discover any acts of treason Dreyman may be committing, but it turns out the real reason...

Singh is King

Interesting take  on our prime minister... What all in entailed in a Prime Minister's job? Is being aware (and responsible) of what is happening in his government part of his job? Or not?

Quote

An interesting one... " One day you will ask me which is more important ? My life or yours? I will say mine and you will walk away, not knowing that you are my life......"                                                                 - Khalil Gibran Very very romantic and senti.. and a lot of sadness also espoused in these beautiful words...beautiful:). Khalil Gibran is apparently the third most selling poet in the world after Shakespeare and Lao Tzu. The flow in his writing is just brilliant.. And of course, he tends to give lot of quotable quotes..  'The Prophet', one of his English works talks about everything in life: love, friendship, death, religion, life, right and wrong.. everything that life can encompass.. and gives a very interesting take on each of these aspects.. a must-read...plus a lot o...

TV Series Review : Entourage

Entourage follows the life of four friends with the central character being of Vincent Chase, a rising movie star in Hollywood. He always hangs out with his friends, his "entourage" consisting of Eric: his manager and best childhood friend, a serious guy who gets involved in serious relationships (unlike the others!!), Johnny Drama: his brother and has been tv star, who is very volatile in his moods and a straight talking guy, and Turtle: the rolly polly friend always trying to do something with his life. The other cast of the series includes Ari Gold: Vinny's agent and a loud mouth, brash and aggressive person but with a clean heart, Lloyd: Ari's secretary and other host of smaller characters. There are regular guest appearances by movie celebrities on the show too. The series just follows the life of the four friends, who live a fun life, with lots of money (Vinny's) and just spend their time spending all the money on holidays, travel, girls and what not....

Movie Review : Patiala House

Frankly, I think our standards after watching Hindi movies fall so low, that even movies which you know are not good, you can enjoy! And that is true for me too! Patiala House falls in that category. Its a movie about Gattu, a NRI staying in Southall who wants to play cricket for England but is unable to, as is father, a Sikh is against all things 'gora'. His dreams shattered, Gattu lives a lustreless life, thereby affecting all around him. Until an opportunity comes to him to play for the English cricket team! Helped by Simran and his friends and family, he is able to realize his lifelong dream and win the a cup for the team. Of course the usual family drama happens, of how this truth is hidden from his father, and what happens when he finds out, etc etc. Am sure if you follow Hindi movies, you can figure it all out! Anyways, the story has tons of gaps. The acting is good. The music boring. Would give it just 2 stars, but as I said, I still could enjoy watching the movie ...

Movie Review : Vitus

Vitus is a Swiss-German movie, and probably not one of the most watched movies in the English speaking world. Such movies motivate me to expand my horizon and watch other language films more than what I usually do. There is a huge treasure of such undiscovered and brilliant movies out there! Vitus is the story of Vitus, a boy genius who plays chess and the piano as a kid and is more intelligent than all around him. What does he go through when his parents put pressure on him to be what he is, an outlier and a genius. Does he like it or does he miss being 'normal'? How does he deal with his extraordinary qualities? He ends up going through the entire circle, enjoying it initially, then hating it and finally accepting himself for what he is. In his earlier years, Vitus finishes school classes much before his age, learns piano from the masters and generally is good at everything he does. But at some level he yearns to be normal and so pretends to be one after an accident app...

Movie Review : No one killed Jessica

Based on the murder of Jessica Lal in 1999 (has it been THAT long ago!), NOKJ portrays the events of the case over the years, the murder, the trial, the bribings, the frustration, the hostile witnesses, the subjugation of justice by power and money, the acquittal and the ensuing media and common man uproar which finally led to justice (?). The story is a good mix of fact and fiction, and given the interest in the real-life events behind the movie, generates enough excitement and curiosity about what would happen next. The movie does manage to connect to the audience, convey the feeling of helplessness of the common man when fighting against power. It does make you wonder about the systems of our country, and what would you do if in the same situation. A brilliant attempt definitely. However, unlike most Hindi movies, though NOKJ scores well on the story, it loses out on the acting. The histrionics from Vidya Balan are just too unbelievable and over the top. She does better in the ...

Movie Review : 7 Khoon Maaf

Why oh why! Why do I always give in to the temptation of going for a Hindi movie!! Aarrgghhh.. they do mostly tend to disappoint, but still there I am, at the next release, in queue to watch another new one, as soon as it releases! And I dont think either of the two is going to change, neither would the Hindi movies improve, nor would I give up on them:). So anyways that's that.. Now to the movie: it had a very interesting theme. A woman who murders seven of her husbands (P.S. who was the seventh one she murdered? I did not get it!!) should make for interesting viewing. But it did not. The pace of the story especially in the first half was sooo slow. And for what? Its not as if Susanna's character was being developed and explained. The movie just kept dragging on and on, slowly. And with each husband, the sequence of events also became predictable. Susanna meets the guy, a song, a marriage, a hidden truth about him and a murder. Some of the deaths were not even justified. ...

Theatre Review : The Merchant of Venice

The Merchant of Venice is the second Shakespeare play I have seen (after Comedy of Errors) and the first serious one for sure. And what a pleasure it has been!! Shakespearen plays have always intimidated me, I guess its the doubt whether I would understand the language and the nuances of his plays. And this one at least does not disappoint! There is a lot to explore, understand and think about in his creation. And its given me the confidence to go for more of his plays for sure! (Would always still read up the storyline before I see the play though!) The show that I saw had Al Pacino playing the role of Shylock. So he was one of the major reasons I went for this play, but when you come out of the show, its still the play that you remember more than just a star performing in it! The play revolves around a loan that a merchant in Venice, Antonio takes from a Jewish moneylender, Shylock for which he agrees to pay back a pound of his flesh if he forfeits the loan. Antonio is unable to...

Movie Review : The King's Speech

Another of the Oscar nominated movies and another one based on real life. The King's Speech details the life of an unconfident younger brother Albert to the future-king of England, King George the VI, the younger brother who stammers and cannot even speak publicly, to the King of England who leads the country through the Second World War. Of course, this change in him happens with time as well as due to the tutelage of Lionel, an Australian speech therapist and the constant support and encouragment of his wife. The movie traces the journey of Albert through this period, his failures, his introduction to Lionel, the ups and downs between the two, the speech training he undertook under Lionel, his brother's accession and abdication of the throne and his own crowning. The acting is brilliant, the story slow and the interaction between Lionel and Albert the high point of the movie. Still found the movie a bit slow, so would just go with 3 stars for this.

Movie Review : Dhobi Ghat

Dhobi Ghat, the directorial venture of Kiran Rao, Aamir Khan's wife.. And hence the hullah around its release... Dhobi Ghat follows the life and happenings of four people in Mumbai, all four from different backgrounds and what they go through over a span of time; the emotions of loneliness, love, fear, inspiration, disappointment and so on. There is Arun or Aamir, a whimsical painter drowned in his own life of art and oblivious to a lot happening in the world and around him; then there is Shai, an NRI banker, looking to interest herself in photographing around the city, and who falls in love with Arun and hangs out with a local Dhobi; Prateik Babbar as the local dhobi during day, rat catcher during night, aspiring actor and a lot more; and the last character of Yasmin, a small town girl who was the previous occupant of Arun's house. We see her through the video letters she has left for her brother and also her views on the city and her life. The acting in the movie is abov...

Book Review : India After Gandhi, by R Guha

I generally don't do book review blogs but this book surely deserved one! Its maybe the best (if the only one) book I have ever read on Indian history, and I am not talking about the Rajas and the Britishraj history. I am talking about the history of India after independence, or after (Mahatma) Gandhi as the book specifies. Its the history of India which might be very important for the people to know and understand, but which is the most neglected in the school textbooks for one. Why is that, just because its current, or we are expected to know it in everyday life anyways? We do tend to know bits and pieces of this history anyways, but there is so much which we still don't know, and this book fills the gaps. The leaders big and more importantly the small ones who have shaped India's history. The history changing events which have given direction to where India is now.. It details Nehru's vision which has shaped a lot of the positives we have in the country. It ta...

Movie Review : The Fighter

We went for this movie after seeing it receive a couple of nominations for the Golden Globe, and I was a bit apprehensive about how good the movie could be if its about boxing.. Well it surpassed my expectations.. Its a really well made movie and a pleasure to watch. The story tracks the career of Mickey, a boxer in the making from a small town, working under the tutelage of his once on-the-rise boxer brother, Dickey and his mom as his agent. They all try hard and there are misses and bad lucks on the way. Plus with his brother being addicted, it doesn't really go too well for Mickey and his family. And slowly things change, Mickey breaks off from his family, trains under professionals and is on the rise. There are multiple issues still though, family ties versus commercial reasons. It all sorts out though and he goes on to win the boxing title. A brilliant movie, with a carefully thought of script. Perfect acting. All in all, a good piece. Would give it 3.5 stars.

TV Series Review : Two and a half men

Two and a half men details the lives and times of Charlie : a super-rich, alcohol loving, completely unconventional womaniser and jingle writer; his brother Alan : a twice divorced and completely unlucky in life kind of loser guy; and his non achiever son, Jake, all three living in a beach house in Malibu. Then there is a supporting cast of Berta : their housekeeper, their mother who they both despise and try to avoid always, Judith : Alan's wife who robs him of whatever he does have left, and Rose : the neighbour stalker in love with Charlie. Together these people lead an interesting life with an excellent and witty script to support. The jokes may be over the top, but they are really funny. The jokes Charlie makes of Alan and his life, the interaction between Charlie and Jake where Charlie teaches Jakes about women and the like much to Alan's discomfort, the fun Berta has based on their problems, how both Charlie and Alan try to run away from their mother and so on. All the...

Movie Review : True Grit

A movie set in the wild west America, about a young girl's journey to find and bring to justice her father's murderer is the background for this movie. She recruits a US marshal for this purpose, a drunkard one at that. On the way while in the Indian territory, they also run into Matt Damon, the Texan ranger, in search of the same murderer, Clancey. The cinematography is good, the setting of the movie well shot. Acting is quite fine. Matt Damon is a bit underused in the movie though, with a not so big role. The storyline though could have used a little more work. It seems very lacklustre without anything compelling in the story. The climax seems quite missing in its punch. On the whole, a not so great movie but a watchable movie definitely. Would give it 3 stars.

TV Series Review : Prison Break

Prison Break is a thriller TV series, where the first season is about a brother getting convicted to free his brother who is on death row in prison. The entire first season shows the planning and execution of this break out from prison. The planning involves getting the designs of the prison, evolving a plan with multiple legs and to a detailed level, including who all in the prison to befriend, and where to obtain the nail to do the digging from! Of course, the execution stage is very different to the planning, with multiple failures and constant modifications required to the plan. The number of people who keep getting involved keeps on going up as and when required; there are info leaks; change of room mates; fights here and there and so on.. And of course the usual prison background happenings: prison fights, blackmarketing, punishment and so on.. And on the outside, there are friends trying to get the brother out by law. Turns out though, he was a scapegoat in a conspiracy involvi...

Movie Review : Band Baja Baraat

Band Baja Baraat, a movie starring an unknown and a slightly known actor and without the fanfare of a big release. And it delivered more than it promised. Band Baja is a good movie, enjoyable and fun, with its 'moments' sprinkled throughout the movie. The dialogues are chilled, the chemistry between the two 'binness partners' electrifying, the story light and breezy.. All in all well packaged. Bittoo Sharma though not really a looker grows on you, you start liking his desiness and terrible English. Anoushka does well as the perky Dilli girl. Some of the songs are good, especially Aiwai Aiwai, the dance is generally energetic and fun. And of course, the mast Dilli setting. If you are from Delhi, you will relate to it all, the Janakpuri area and its eccentricities, the Dilliwale and of course the grand indian wedding! The one hiccup in the movie though is in the second half: the track where they get apart and start fighting and hating each other. It got a bit painfu...
