Movie Review : Well Done Abba
Given the recent drought of good movies in the last month or at least lack of big starrers recently (thanks to IPL I guess), I landed up to see a movie which otherwise I may have given a miss, 'Well done Abba'. And what a good decision it turned out to be!! Its a long time since a (good) movie based on rural India has been released and this movie really does justice to this setting: the story of a person trying to fight the system while trying to get a well (baudi) for himself in his village in Andhra Pradesh.
It is essentially a 'social message' movie, but it has been so simply and so skillfully done, it actually surprises as well as entertains you completely. Well done Abba doesn't really boast big stars (though it does an acclaimed director), I guess that adds to the charm of movie by itself. The movie has a host of smaller actors playing multiple characters, mostly the tableau of the village.
The movie is very slow, and for a long time you keep wondering what the punch in the movie would be; or is it just going to be another movie on how a person tried to be successful within the system and failed. And post interval you get your answer, he does get successful and in so funny a manner, its surprising!!
That's the biggest plus point of the movie I would say, so simply and with ease multiple social issues have been tackled, it does make you feel that not all is bad with the world:). The way Boman Irani fights for his right, its completely unbelievable, you have to see it to believe it! It just surprises you so much that you wonder how it would work and then you realize that it would because its logically true. The story is a masterpiece, especially post interval, hats off to the writer! (I wont break the suspense here though, as its more fun to watch!)
The characters have all been etched very well, each being given its due (and there are lots of them!). Boman Irani is as good as ever (think you don't need to mention it anymore nowadays, he is so good). Minissha Lamba was quite a surprise and the fun package of the movie. Songs were catchy, especially the 'Hum to apni baudi lenge'. All in all, a very nice and enjoyable experience.
Would give it 3.5 stars.
