Movie Review: Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani
Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani had the potential to a fun-filled movie about friendships and relationships but all it turned out to be was a badly mashed-up directionless 3 hours of drama! Would rate it as one of Ranbir's worst movies and was very disappointed with his choice for the first time.
The negatives of the movie are many. The characterisation of the characters was very weak. How could Deepika wearing minis all the time be a padhaku? Just wearing specs does not make anyone studious, there is a lot more that needs to go in the development of the character (she looks hot though!). Ranbir's character wasn't clear either. Did he just not care about anyone other than himself? Sometimes he was that person and sometimes he was the typical Hindi movie nice guy. So confusing! Plus he looked a lot older and maturer in the movie than earlier which did not fit either.
The story was weak too, going all over the place and not convincing at all. How does meeting someone for a week's trek make someone fall in love? Then they meet again for a wedding and its the same story all over again. When you are making a modern love story, you need to make it modern. Not the ghisa-pita Hindi movie story all over again! The story meanders all over the place with no direction at all.
Also, it was not clear what the movie was about. Was it about friendships? love? following one's dreams? relationships? It just tried to deal with all these issues and ended up not devoting enough time to either. Plus we've had so many movies in the last couple of years on the difficulty of the modern generation to commit and hence a long drama before the couple unite (Break ke Baad, I hate luv storys, Love aaj Kal etc..), its got boring and repetitive now.
The movie did have its moments though, some comedy sequences were funny (though too few and far in between). Some of the songs were fun too, especially Badtameez. Its a fun song (and the main reason I saw the movie!). Was not impressed with Madhuri's song though. The choreography and lyrics could have been better to suit such a great dancer.
The locales where the movie was shot were spectacular, Manali and Paris and Udaipur. Beautiful! All lent a glamourous appeal to the movie.
On the whole, its watchable but not interesting at all. Would go for 2.5 stars for this one.
