Movie Review: Gangs of Wasseypur I

Gangs of Wasseypur is a movie which brings to my mind the word 'good cinema' which is more often than not used to refer to the artsy part of the movie business. But GOW is not just artsy, its as mainstream as possible but still maintaining its integrity and saying and showing what it wants to!

I don't really know what I can write about this movie. I think its just amazing. The story is well crafted, flowing at its own pace but with a solid foundation. The pace is definitely slow, it just takes its own time to reach its end, introducing and developing all its characters on the way. It meanders all over the place but finally takes you where it wants to.

The character etching is amazing, you remember each character for what he or she stands for. Sardar Khan with the i-dont-care-about-anything attitude is just so real. His acting is out of this world, and even though there are many of his dialogues which are good, what I remember him for is his dance on top of a tempo to 'kasam paida karne wale ki'. It was such an apt part to his character, doing whatever comes to his mind without really bothering about its implications or how it looks!

Another character which came out very strong in the movie is of Najma. Her strength is just amazing. How she reacts to different situations, angrily with his husband but when it came to the outside world, she supports him in everything even when she does not get much in return. Contrast this with Durga, and the character of Najma becomes even stronger.

The music is very well done, so different. You have to listen to the songs later on to realise how local and folksy they are. and how catchy! Dialogues are well written, very hard hitting at times. Even though the movie is gory, it still maintains a light edge to it with loads of comedy everywhere.

The movie keeps you engaged and you dont mind seeing it again (all the mindless gore notwithstanding). Cant wait to see part 2. And I am an Anurag Kashyap fan for sure. That guy really knows how to make movies with a difference!

I will go with 4.5 stars for this one.
