Movie Review : Aarakshan

Aarakshan follows the story of Prabhakar Anand, the principal of STM college. He is a man of principles who believes in true education of all. He runs free classes for the weak at his house and is revered by all around him. He however rubs the politicians the wrong way and then they wreak havoc on his life, causing him to lose his job, his house and his reputation. He however fights back on the strength of his abilities, and his belief in real education. During this period, the issue of caste based reservation comes up but then gets lost in the host of other things shown during the movie.

Aarakshan is a movie with a confused message. It starts out with trying to deal with the issues of casteism and reservation, as reflected in the title of the movie. But at some point it becomes all about the issues of education and corruption in our country, and leaves the audience confused about what the movie is trying to say (By any chance, did I see the censored version of the movie with all the controversial statements cut out?).

If this aspect of the story is kept out, its not a bad movie. Not a great one either. The pace is too slow at times though and tends to bore you. Manoj Bajpai's acting as always is mindblowing. He is very convincing as the scheming and powerful villain of the movie,  but his character's end in the movie is unconvincing again! Amitabh is the usual, Deepika better than usual, Saif has a small part to play and is fine, Prateik is good.

The only part of this movie worth remembering are the issues they bring out about education. Where is real education, in the money minting coaching class or through dedicated teachers who make learning interesting? Why has education and teachers not been prioritised by our government? They are worth mulling about.

As for the movie, would barely give it 2.5 stars.
