Movie Review : Peepli Live

What a movie!! Hail to the amazing movie maker, Aamir Khan, the actor director and producer... (and that too coming from a Shah Rukh fan!). You have to give it to the guy, where does he manage to find these ' hindi movies' from! Rang De Basanti, Taare Zameen Par and then this!

With a subject matter like farmer suicides in India, it is so easy to go horribly wrong and look at what a masterpiece he came out with! So beautifully crafted, funny, well edited, with brilliant acting, a tight story and the hitting end.. It is difficult to imagine how a movie which throughout is just funny ends up making such a strong statement on such a strong topic!

Peepli live is the story of a farmer in Peepli village, Natha, his bid to commit suicide to get money for his family and the ensuing drama by the Indian media and politicians.

The whole rural setting is very realistically portrayed, the characters so perfectly crafted that they are etched in your mind even after the movie finishes and the story builds up slowly but steadily. Don't really know what all to comment about in the movie, its so close to perfect!

Which of the characters do I write about? Natha, with his innocent and lost face? Or the quick tongued wife and the even more agressive mother?! Or the manipulative brother? Or of course the media persons, from the low to the worst form or the journalist with a conscience? Or the politicians..? Or the farmer who is shown intermittently walking his cycle or digging deeper and deeper... Each character has his own story to tell and remember...

There are so many layers, so many issues brought up in this film, soo many memorable moments, its so difficult to even be able to express it..

It was a beautiful movie, right on target.. A strong message gotten across so lightly. Looks like there is still hope for indian cinema given the recent spate of terrible movies:). This would be a 4.5 star for me.
