Movie Review: Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara

Zindagi na milegi dobara, as would be expected with such a star cast, had managed to raise expectations a lot..! And it did match those, but failed to surpass them.. The first half of the movie is awesome fun! Three friends on an adventure trip across the towns of Spain, three men who try to be boys and have some old-styled fun! The dialogues are witty, the jokes outright funny, poking fun at each others shortcomings: its all just like the old school and college days:). The jokes in this half of the movie are the type that you would laugh out loud at while rocking your seat. Totally enjoyed it! Farhan Akhtar was a revelation, he totally rocked as the funny guy of the group. His expressions when trying to crack a joke or stifle a laugh were just so real! Hritik was a caricature of the materialist banker, though of course his actual profession could not be ascertained with certainty:))! Was he a trader or an investment banker or a broker! But thats not important I guess. Abhay acted

Movie Review: Delhi Belly

Wah wah wah! Am so impressed.. Seeing a new Hindi movie after so long, and I wasn't disappointed at all! Aamir Khan has managed to consistently deliver something new and good everytime, and he has done it again..! And I think its a good idea for Imran Khan also to stick to doing projects with his mamu . Was a welcome change from Luck and Kidnap (neither of which I had the courage to watch actually!). Anyways to the movie.. Delhi Belly is in a league of its own, so very different from the English artsy kind of movies we are so used to seeing.. So cool and chic and youthful without being pretentious and artificial.. It just felt so natural, to the point of surprising me! The story is nothing new I guess, its been done to death in many movies especially Guy Ritchie's ones.  Delhi Belly is similar, tracing a couple of days in the life of three friends staying in a run-down house in Delhi. One is a journalist, one a photographer and one a cartoonist: each character has his ow

Sallu is back!!

Salman Khan seems to have created a niche kind of roles for himself in the last few years, and what a niche it is!! Wanted, Dabangg and now ready? Loud, brash, over-the-top, unbelievable but a lovable character.. He has started being himself in all his movies now, with the swagger of a star, and limited acting or even dancing abilities! It looks like he has no more concerns for any conventional sensibilities! The new song from 'Ready', Character Dheela, is the perfect example of it. You see the song, and you know its made for Salman!! Fun, total masti and no logic.. ahaa..! What a pleasure to see someone has the guts to just be himself, whatever he is.. and enjoy it totally!! Nice rocking song, totally fun! Go see it!!

Movie Review: Dum Maaro Dum

Aaaaaah!! Finally a Hindi movie is released! After ages!! Agreed cricket is the nation's religion but so are movies!! And unlike the real religions, these can surely co-exist peacefully! Why then such a drought for so long a time??!!! Anyways looks like the industry has said, cricket (and the IPL) can go to hell, we will start releasing movies anyways!! And so finally, we've got to see a Bollywood offering after so long... Dum Maaro Dum is a thriller set in Goa; following a police officer's war against the drug cartel in the state. Its is a nice movie, past paced with never a boring moment. There are multiple stories in the movie all crossing paths with each other; the vulnerable lovers separated by distance, where the guy gets involved in the drug ring: the police officer with his own memories and demons to fight against: the singer whose ex has been caught in the ring long ago; and the background of the whole story is the beautiful and idyllic Goan setting.. The cha

Movie Review: Harishchandrachi Factory

I guess a movie not in Hindi or English is foreign cinema, isnt it:)? Anyways Harishchandrachi is a Marathi movie on the making of the first Indian silent movie, 'Raja Harishchandra' and of course the start of the biggest film industry in the world. It is such a beautiful and positive movie, its actually surprising! Most of the non-mainstream movies in India seem to focus so much on the depressing aspects of life, this movie would actually qualify as an exception! And it was India's entry to the Oscars in the foreign film category too! As a friend mentioned, he kept waiting for tragedy to strike at any point in the movie which eventually doesn't! Harishchandrachi is the story of Dadasaheb Phalke or Khepla as he prefers to be called while making this first Indian movie. I might have used the words, of the 'struggles' of Khepla to make the movie, but its been shown in such a positive way, that using the word struggles doesn't do justice to the tone of the

Theatre Review : How to succeed in business without really trying

How to succeed.... is a musical comedy playing on Broadway currently and stars Daniel Radcliffe (or better known as Harry Potter) and John Larroquette in the major roles.  How to succeed is a spoof on the corporate world, where the protagonist uses a self help book on "how to succeed in business" to make his way up the corporate ladder. His methods are morally questionable, but following those he rises up from being a window-washer to the Chairman of the big World Wide Wickets company.  The tricks used by him include anything and everything, making the right contacts including with the secretaries of the bosses (;-) ), of getting your bosses fired to get their jobs, knowing inside information about people to use as and when required, of trying to find common links with the higher ups and so on... People in the office hate him or fear him and on the way, he ignores the one person who actually cares for him for what he is. The list of what he does is long, and no

Victory and Euphoria

We've won it! 2011 Cricket World Cup is India's! Dhoni and team have done it for the country:). After years of watching world cup after world cup and being disappointed everytime, its finally happened! And Sachin finally gets his hand on the elusive trophy. Still can't believe it, still hasn't sunk in.. but its true!! We are the world champions now.. Finally, and after so long...!!! Will remember it for long, we were there when it happened.. Following India through the initial stages, where they struggled many times. But when it came to the big matches, the team stepped up! Australia beaten at Ahmedabad and Pakistan beaten at the high profile match at Mohali. And the final.. cheering and following each ball with waited breath.. ! This is one match, one win our generation will remember!! The unhappiness with Mahela's century.. the lost hope when Sri Lanka made 274.. the panic when we lost Sehwag and Tendulkar too soon.. and then the rocking knock by Gambhir
